Quilt Flash

Thoughts on Quilts: Quilt patterns have always made me feel at home. Something deep in my soul loves them. I feel the pull of history, the thousands of hands that tediously stitched intricate pieces together to represent a phase in life. I think it’s one of the most tender and skillful art forms. For this reason, quilts also make me think about the divide between fine art and craft, and how the history of women’s work has been documented. Pieces created and displayed in galleries, historically by mostly men, were declared “fine art,” while pieces created with skilled labour, symbolism and intention were seen as less than for being made within the domestic space. Quilts hold the voices of women from the past. They show us the language and symbols they loved. Maybe that’s part of why they make me feel so at home. There is something deeply human about leaving pieces of yourself behind in the things you make, and something tender about knowing those pieces can still speak long after you’re gone.
