Dubsado alternative for illustrators
Dubsado is a capable product, but it was not designed around commission work. Here is where that shows, and what a commission-first platform does differently.
Where Dubsado falls short
Commission work is a negotiation, not a time slot. You need to quote scope, take a deposit, agree a revision count, and deliver files. Calendar tools model none of that, so the work happens in DMs and invoices.
Dubsado is powerful and correspondingly heavy to configure. For a solo illustrator taking commissions, most of the setup cost buys workflow you will not use.
Studio Haven vs Dubsado at a glance
- Commission inquiries with an approve-then-quote flow instead of instant booking
- Revision limits agreed up front and tracked against the project
- Deposit on acceptance through Stripe Connect, balance on delivery
- Portfolio pages that sell the work rather than a booking link
- File delivery to the client portal when the piece is finished
- Custom quotes for scope that does not fit a fixed price
What Dubsado does well
Dubsado is the most configurable client-management tool in this list. If you have already invested in building your workflows there, that work is real and worth something.
The point of this page is not that Dubsado is a bad product. It is that it was built for a different job than commission work, and the gap shows up in the parts of the week that cost you the most time.
What switching actually involves
Do not try to replicate every Dubsado workflow on day one. Move the client-facing booking and deposit first, keep the back-office automations where they are, and consolidate later if it makes sense.
What it costs
Studio Haven Pro is CA$15/month in Canada, or US$15/month in the United States and Europe. Draft setup is free; a 14-day trial starts when you go live. While Pro is active, clients do not pay a Studio Haven platform fee at checkout, and deposits settle into your own Stripe or Square account. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
Try it before you move anything
Open the live demo studio and book against it as a client, deposit included, without creating an account. When it looks right, create your store and move your work across at your own pace. More comparisons are in the guides index.
